HELPING IN THE DEFENCE OF MALAYA SEA & AIR SUCCESSES. ACTION AGAINST JAPANESE IN BORNEO. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, Noon.) RUGBY, December 14. A success by the Dutch East Indies Navy is announced by the Batavia radio, which says two more enemy ships have been sunk off the east coast of Malaya, one cargo snip and one tanker. An official communique from Batavia says: “Enemy aircraft appeared, over several places in the East Indies. “The Netherlands East Indian air force, which has been reinforced by Australian units, is taking part in the defence of Malaya. "Dutch East Indian troops took part in an action against a Japanese settlement on the east coast of British North Borneo, at the request of our Ally.” RAID ALARM SOUNDED IN SAN FRANCISCO. • APPROACHING PLANES DISAPPEAR. (Received This Day, 11.35 a.m.) SAN FRANCISCO, December 14. Army Headquarters said unidentified planes approached the coast on Saturday night and the alert was sounded, but no blackout was ordered because the planes disappeared. FIGHTING PLANES SUPPORTING BRITISH TROOPS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.57 a.m.) RUGBY, December 14. A Singapore communique states: “Fighting continues in the Kedah area and British forces are in contact with the enemy in Kelantan (an unfederated State in the north-east sector). On both fronts support is being given by British fighters. “Nothing new is reported from Kuantan. Extensive reconnaissance is being carried out by British aircraft today.”
