IN THE PHILIPPINES ATTEMPT TO GAIN AIR BASES. PROGRESS IN MOPPING UP. WASHINGTON, December 13. A communique says Japanese aircraft bombed Cebu and Clarkfield in Philippines. The enemy’s plan is now clearly revealed as an attempt to gain improvised air bases outside the area held by the United States ground defences. The officer commanding the United States forces in the Philippines, according to an American broadcast, stated that mopping-up operations in the Lingayen area of Luzon, 100 miles from Manila, have been completed.
