Wellington College Dux. The dux of Wellington College this year is Lance George. The memorial medal has been awarded to L. J. Lambourne.
Preparing for Air Raids. The first tangible evidence of activities to safeguard the civil population against the effects of sudden air attack were to be seen in slit trenches appearing in public parks and private gardens at Auckland during the weekend. Picture theatres are to close in Queen Street at 9.30 p.m. Caves capable of sheltering many thousands ' of people are to be provided with electric light and seats by the Mount Eden Borough Council. Some of these caves have been closed up for many years.
Curtailment of Holiday Leave. The necessity for workers in industries essential to the maintenance of the war effort to curtail their Christmas and New Year holidays to the fullest possible extent was stressed in a statement made on Saturday by the Minister of Labour, Mr Webb. He said the need for the fullest output of essential goods was so great that anything that at present impeded or prevented acceleration of output must be removed. The Minister said that the Industrial Emergency Council had been reviewing the industrial position in the light of the serious situation in which this Dominion, in common with the other Allied countries, was placed. It had already made certain recommendations, and these would be made known within the next few days.
Miners to Forego Holidays. The Minister of Mines, Mr Webb, accompanied by the Under-Secretary of Mines, arrived at Westport yesterday by special plans from Wellington. He was met by the Mayor, Mr Robertson, the county chairman, Mr J. Ward, the county engineer and clerk, Mr C. F. Schadick, and Mrs I. Ryan, secretary of the Labour Representation Council. The Minister’s visit was to stress the need for the best effort from miners. Mr Webb gave an assurance that shipping would be available to freight the coal to its destinations. The coal miners of the Buller district are in agreement with the Minister, and instead of taking the usual ten days’ Christmas vacation, will have as holidays only Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New ‘Year’s Day.
