Senator Tobey, in the Senate today, said it was reported that a large part of the Pacific Fleet had been wiped out and he demanded that the people be told the truth, ‘•‘The pride of the. American people in their Navy and their confidence in some of their officials,” he said, “has been- terribly shaken.” •Senator Stewart demanded that the United States immediately seize all French possessions in the Western Hemisphere or nearby, in order to avoid possible attacks upon the eastern seaboard by Axis' planes. Senator Stewart said: “We should seize Martinique, French Guiana and every other foot. of. soil from which enemy aeroplanes could attack.” JAPANESE COMMAND APPOINTMENT OF EMPEROR’S BROTHER-IN-LAW. (Received This Day, 9.40 a.m.) TOKIO, December 9. . The Emperor’s brother-in-law, General Prince Higashikuni, has been appointed . Commander-in-Chief at the National Defence Headquarters, succeeding General Yamada, who will remain as the Supreme War Councillor. Lieut.-General Kobyaishi has been appointed Chief of Staff at General Headquarters, replacing General Ka■wabe, who was appointed on September 12. Mr Cordell Hull indicated today that the United States should be on her guard against a sudden Axis move in support of Japan. PRESIDENT TO SPEAK (Received This Day, 12.5 p.m.) WASHINGTON, December 9. The White House said President Roosevelt’s speech tonight would be devoted largely to a discussion of the Nazi pattern rather than specific details of the war operations in the Pacific.
