NAVY LEAGUE

MASTERTON BRANCH ACTIVITIES AMONG SCHOOLS. LARGE NUMBER OF GARMENTS PACKED. A well attended meeting of the committee of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Navy League was held in Masterton yesterday, Mrs S. R. Gawith presiding. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames O. A. Bunny, H. McKenzie Douglas, P. H. Nathan, C. Deans, H. K. Mclntosh, W. G. Lamb, W. R. Birch and Misses B. Vallance and B. Barton. It was decided that garments should be packed at a meeting to be held in January. It was stated that the wool depot would be closed on Boxing Day and January 2, but would be open on each Friday in December and January. The wool committee reported that 80 garments were ready for packing, bringing the total for the year up to 1161. The committee wish to thank all those members and friends whose work had made it possible to send these garments to Wellington for shipment, and also those who had donated tinned foods for the men of the minesweepers, 2058 tins having been received during the year. It was reported that 444 school members had been enrolled during the year. There were a few more returns to come in. Solway College, St. Matthew’s School, Hadlow Preparatory School, Putara, Newman and Kopuaranga schools had maintained their high membership, and two more schools, St. Bride’s Convent and the Alfrcdton School had been added to the school register. Several parcels of reading matter were forwarded to the Mission to Seamen in Wellington, and it was decided to send donations of £2 each to the Mission to Seamen, and to the British Sailors’ Society. Votes of thanks were passed to the following for assistance given during the year:—The Aard Motor Service, Midland Hotel Co., Mr P. J- Borthwick, Messrs Dalgety and Co., and Transport (Wairarapa) Ltd.
