MADE BY BRITISH FORCES IN LIBYA

I Enemy Being Driven Gradually Westward OVER 700 WOUNDED NEW ZEALANDERS RESCUED AT SIDI REZEGH AIR ATTACKS CONTINUED IN FULL VIGOUR LONDON, December 9. In Libya our forces are still pushing gradually westward. Following on the linking of our Tobruk and southern forces at Sidi Rezegh, an attack launched on Sunday drove the enemy from El Duda towards El Adem. There is a strong Axis concentration at El Adem, capable of putting up a substantial resistance. A Reuter correspondent reports that in this action the remnants of an Italian division were mopped up. A Cairo communique states that ground gained from the enemy a few miles west of El Duda has been consolidated. The communique reports great activity by British mobile columns—an activity reflected in the reluctance of the enemy to engage. In an action west of Bir el Gobi, 23 enemy tanks received direct hits and five were completely knocked out. It is now disclosed that when we retook Sidi Rezegh, more than 700 wounded New Zealand soldiers were rescued from the enemy. The British forces now have complete freedom to manoeuvre between Tobruk and Solium. Isolated enemy positions in the frontier area are being subjected to attack. Successful bombing raids continue in the battle area and on other targets. A coinmunique states that yesterday ten enemy planes were destroyed and others damaged. Three of cur planes are missing. On Sunday night our aircraft raided Tripoli and Castel Benito, where an aeroplane hangar was set on fire.
