MAGNIFICENT FIGHT

AGAINST JAPANESE TROOPS AT KOTABARU AUSTRALIAN AIRMEN SET SHIPS ON FIRE. LAND FORCES. DECIMATE ENEMY. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.15 a.m.) SINGAPORE, December 8. It is revealed that the Royal Australian Air Force Hudson Bomber Squadron at Kotabaru put up a magnificent fight against the first Japanese landing force. They went in against transports masthead high and dropped bombs with the greatest accuracy and daring. The Japanese used barges and fast motor-launches, but the Australian airmen, who were the first Britishers to fire against the new enemy, strafed the landing craft with machine-guns, causing many casualties among the Japanese. The Hudsons encountered no enemy planes near Kotabaru and left enemy ships blazing. An Australian Flight Lieutenant reported that the A.I.F. and Indian troops, who were associated in the defence of the aerodrome, were putting up a grand fight, decimating the landing forces with machine-gun fire. The Japanese are reported to be attempting a second landing, with larger forces.
