COMMUNITY CALL
TOWARD A CHRISTIAN BRITAIN. A manifesto calling on the community to prepare now for the postwar world, signed by the Lord Mayor of Manchester, the Mayor of Salford and the Mayor of Stretford, was formally adopted at a meeting in Manchester representative of every phase of social activity. The manifesto calls for work toward a Christian Britain, and thus sums up its purpose: —War is teaching us that the whole world is a unit in which the needs of each can be met only by taking into consideration the needs of all. To restrain aggression is a Christian obligation; to take revenge, never. Justice and mercy toward man, humility toward God—these are' the foundations of order. By these the twin evils of war and unemployment can be abolished. In such a centre as Manchester, with its worldwide commercial connections, these foundations can be laid. We therefore call all the citizens of Manchester, Salford, Stretford and the surrounding region to prepare themselves in this spirit for the post-war world, and to pray, work and fight to that end now.
