BOMB EXPLOSIONS
HEARD OVER TELEPHONE IN NEW YORK Estimated Force of 150 Japanese Planes at Hawaii IMMEDIATE MOBILISATION ORDERED IN UNITED STATES Later message state that clouds of smoke were seen over the naval yards at Pearl Harbour. It is estimated that 150 Japanese planes took part in the raid on Hawaii. Correspondents telephoned their stories to their head offices in the United States and Canada. The head-office of the British United Press states that bomb explosions could be heard over the telephone in New York while correspondents were puttingthrough their stories from Hawaii. An army transport carrying timber has been torpedoed 1300 miles from San Francisco. The President has ordered the American Army and Navy to carry out undisclosed orders for the defence of the United States. The attack on Manila began with the approach of two aircraft, which flew over the harbour and dropped bombs. A message from Washington states that the United States has ordered the immediate mobilisation of all military personnel throughout the country. Another message, not yet confirmed, states that a foreign warship approached Pearl Harbour and began a bombardment of the outer defences. Anti-aircraft guns went into action at Pearl Harbour.
