“The Untutored Sassenach Ear.” Several suggestions, many of them facetious and some of them uncomplimentary to Scottish music, were forthcoming from councillors when Cr. H. E. Denton inquired at the meeting of the Christchurch City Council the reason for the disparity in payments made to brass and pipe bands for municipal concerts. The brass bands, he said, were to' receive £lO a concert, against £6 13s 4d received by the pipe bands. “More music,” suggested Cr. C. ! D. W. L. Sheppard, amid laughter. “More polish needed,” was Cr. F. S. Wilding’s suggestion. The Deputy-Mayoi’ (Cr. M. E. Lyons) said the only explanation was precedent, and he thought it was based on the fact that brass bands usually had a larger personnel than pipe bands. “The suggestion that the pipe band is less musical could come only from the possessor of an untutored Sassenach ear,” he added.
