CENTRAL SCHOOL
MEETING OF COMMITTEE HEADMASTER'S REPORT. END OF YEAR ARRANGEMENTS. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Central School Committee was held in the school last evening, there being present: Messrs J. E. MeV. Calwell (presiding), W. R. Nicol, A.' Dixon, P. H. Shaw, C. Braggins, A. E. Nelson and W. Butler. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs A. E. Gibbs and J. H. Cole. Accounts amounting to £2 17s 6d were passed. The matter of adjusting insurances was left in the hands of the secretary. The headmaster, Mr E. G. Coddington, who was present, in his monthly report, stated that the roll number was now 615 and the average attendance had improved. At the main school the percentage was 92 and at East 90. Final examinations had been commenced and very good work was being presented. In connection with the film “One Hundred Crowded Years,” the sum of £8 12s had been handed in for the Patriotic Fund. Armistice Day had been observed and the usual impressive two minutes’ silence observed. Mr Beere, officer of the Wairarapa Automobile Association gave interesting lectures on road safety to the children. These were much appreciated and should bring valuable results. Pedestrian crossings had been laid down by the council close to the school and were proving of great service. The courtesy of laying these was much appreciated. The children had run an afternoon concert to raise funds to provide gifts for children sick and in hospital at Christmas. A sports day will be held on December 15 and parents and friends are invited to see over the school where children’s work will be set out. The headmaster wished the committee the compliments of the season and thanked them for their helpful attitude and for the pleasant associations' of the year. The headmaster’s report was adopted and the committee’s compliments were passed on to the headmaster and staff. It was decided that the museum be kept open every Thursday evening for visitors. In future no chairs would be lent out or hired owing to the general wear and tear involved. The matter of a Christmas party for the primer children was left in the hands of the headmaster and an amount set aside for this purpose. It was decided to procure oil for the floors. The matter of firewood for next winter was dealt with. Arrangements for the cutting of grass, in the recreation ground and at the East School were completed. The visiting committee for the month will be Messrs Calwell, Braggins and Shaw.
