ST. JOHN AMBULANCE

ANNEAL INSPECTION WORK OF NURSING DIVISION PRAISED. PRESENTATION OF CERTIFICATES The annual inspection of the St. John Ambulance Nursing and Cadet Divisions was held on Saturday afternoon in the Municipal Hall, Masterton. The inspection was conducted by Messrs W. Dutton (Commissioner), G. Hislop (District Superintendent), Mrs G. Barltrop (Lady District Superintendent), and Miss H. McKnight (Lady District Officer), all of Wellington. There were 28 ambulance men, 25 ambulance cadets, 40 members of the nursing division, including 34 voluntary aids, and 14 nursing cadets on parade. Members of the Ambulance Division under the supervision of Superintendent J. C. Cooper, did first aid work and a team gave a demonstration of stretcher drill led by Corporal C. Greenwood. Ambulance cadets under the supervision of C. McQuade (Cadet Superintendent), gave a demonstration of stretcher drill and did first aid team work, "being led by Sergeant L. Dean, Cadets R. Berney, F. Brown and R. Whittaker.

Members of the Nursing Division under the supervision of Miss L. Whitehouse (Lady . Division Superintendent) and Mrs M. Stewart (Voluntary Aid Commandant), gave demonstrations in bed making, bedside attendance to sick patients, preparation of fomentations poultices and dressings, and first aid and roller bandaging. The nursing cadets with - Miss O. Clemas (Lady Cadet Superintendent), did roller and first aid bandaging. ■ The work of all divisions was highly commended by the inspecting officers.

Mr W. Dutton said that he felt quite sure that if the call came members of the St. John Ambulance would uphold the traditions of their Order with confidence.

Mrs G. Barltrop said that the Nursing Division was a strong one and did splendid work. Mrs Barltrop urged all members to train V.A’s. and asked each one to recruit new members for the division.

Mrs H. E. Pitheg (lady president), gave a special welcome to Mrs Barltrop. who has been a member of the St. John Ambulance for many years. Mrs Stewart gave a report on the lectures and training which the V.A’s. had had during the year. Miss Whitehouse thanked Mrs Barltrop for her kind remarks and said that she felt sure that each member would do her best to continue the work of the Nursing Division. Miss H. McKnight inspected the stores and records with Mrs F. McKenzie (Lady Ambulance Officer). The following certificates were presented: —

Air Raid Precautions: A. Tregurtha, L. Whitehouse, O. Clemas, M. Speedy, L. A. Thomson. These were the first to be awarded in this district. Grand Priors Badges (the highest honour a cadet can attain): Cadet Officer R. J. Morris and Private L. Dean. Senior First Aid Certificates: K. Alderson, F. Bath, B. Rush, C. Graham, G. Dean, E. Riley, H. Worthington, N. McNicholl, J. Holme, J. Mason, G. Donaldson, F. Knutson, W. Dale, C. Douglass, H. Leete, L. Lamont, R. Wadham, A. Parson, C. Callander, C. Carmine, F. Taplin, L. Coley Junr., R. Riley, and R. Cruthers. Cadet First Aid: R. Rind, H. Leighton R. Williams, J. Camden, J. Cairns, R Cross, F. Dell, and R. Whittaker. After the parade the visiting officers were entertained at afternoon tea in the Y.M.C.A. lounge by officers of the local division.
