ANOTHER GREAT BATTLE
IN PROGRESS SOUTH-EAST OF TOBRUK
TRAPPED GERMANS TRYING DESPERATELY TO BREAK THROUGH
BRITISH CORRIDOR WIDENED AND STRENGTHENED German General and 600 Men Taken Prisoner OUR PATROLS REACH COAST SOUTH OF BENGHAZI ENEMY MOTOR TRANSPORT INTERCEPTED AND DESTROYED LONDON, November 30. A fierce tank battle is raging in the area south-east of Tobruk where the Germans are trying to smash their way west through the corridor linking the Tobruk and other British forces. The Imperial link-up is growing stronger and wider. The corridor south-east of Tobruk is now six miles wide. The situation is described from Cairo as particularly hopeful an encouraging. . The trapped armoured forces of General Rommel are fighting desperately to escape from the net, so far unsuccessfully. The German forces trapped are considerable. A Cairo communique states that after a lull yesterday morning an intense battle developed in the afternoon when the Germans strove to break out to the westward. British forces turned the enemy left flank and the German attempt to escape was defeated. The German general officer commanding the 25th Panzer Division was taken prisoner, together with ten other officers and 600 soldiers. GERMANS ATTACKED IN REAR Imperial columns advancing north-west from the Egyptian frontier have attacked the enemy in the rear. The Germans, it is stated, are now in a position in which they must fight it out to the last tank. They are now “fighting like mad’’ in trying to escape from the British net. Magnificent work is being done by the Imperial air forces in every phase of the conflict, particularly in co-operation with the land operations. British mechanised patrols succeeded yesterday in reaching the coast of Oyrenaica between Jedabaya and Benghazi. They intercepted and destroyed enemy motor transport. The British forces which captured the Jalo oasis have been reorganised and refuelled for the next stage of their task.
