Woman’s Death in Hospital.

Eleanor Falconer, aged 54, who was admitted to the Dunedin hospital on Thursday, apparently suffering from the effects of poisoning, died on Saturday evening.

Vital Statistics. The vital statistics registered in Masterton last month were (those for the corresponding month last year given in parentheses): —Births, 23 (29); deaths, 8 (12); marriages, 4 (7). Drivers’ Licences.

Thirty-six drivers’ licences were issued by the .Masterton Borough Council last month, making the total to date for the current licensing year 2184. The Masterton County Council issued eight drivers’ licences in November, bringing l the total to 1165.

More Knitters Wanted. There is still a large quantity of knitting wool for patriotic purposes available for distribution at the Women’s Rest Rooms, Dixon Street, the depot of the Masterton Women’s Patriotic Committee. The committee appeals to all who have assisted by knitting, to help and thereby enable supplies of knitted articles to be maintained for our forces on active service overseas.

Pennies and Nickels. No pennies have been struck at the Royal Mint during the last 15 months. Some 800 tons of copper a year, the officials calculated, could be saved by ceasing to make them, and it was more important to have copper for the munition works than for the pocket. Instead of pennies, far more yellow, 12-sided “nickel” 3d bits are being issued. “Nickel” as a description for these small coins errs handsomely on the side of generosity. The alloy contains exactly 1 per cent of nickel, and the rest is a mixture of copper- and zinc—that is, ordinary brass. The Royal Mint has reasons of its own for liking the 12sided “nickel.” Today all coin making is lucrative. A shilling’s worth of silver will make about 5s of coin. A shilling’s worth of bronze will make about 6s worth of pennies, but a shilling’s worth of nickel-brass alloy will make about 30s in 3d bits.
