A REAL RESPONSIBILITY.
'pi-lOUGH it was a little slow in starting on its National Savings effort, Masterton has been commendably quick in .sending the indicator flag to the peak of the Post Office flagpole. By Friday forenoon last, the quota amount for the week (£784)., had been reached and at the closing of business on Saturday a substantial surplus was shown which will be credited to the week opening today. The objective should be to keep the flag flying continuously from week to week henceforth and there is every reason to hope and 1 believe that this will be achieved. If an incentive were needed to a sustained community effort it certainly might be found in the standards the members of our fighting forces have set in all the campaigns in which they have been engaged and in the account they are now giving of themselves in the battles in Libya. Masterton has'some leeway to overtake yet before it will be abreast of the performance of .a number of other towns where the National Savings campaign is concerned. ; ~
There is, as the Mayor (Mr Jordan) has said, a real responsibility on the whole community to keep the flag flying. An active part in the war savings movement is advantageous to the individual as well as to the State, whether at a long or a short view. The overshadowing immediate demand and necessity of course is that the sinews of war should be provided in full measure, and they cannot be provided better than from the detail savings of the people. At the»same time, the savings will be of appreciable advantage ultimately to those by whom they are made and there is yet another benefit, and a great one, in the effect of methodical and widely distributed savingin helping to maintain an economic balance and to check inflation.
