WOMEN’S DIVISION
MASTERTON BRANCH FINAL MEETING OF YEAR. SUCCESSFUL SHOP DAY. There was a good attendance of members of the Masterton branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union at the last meeting of the year held in the Rest Room, Masterton, yesterday. Mrs C. C. Jackson presided. This meeting had been postponed from the usual first Wednesday in the month, on account of a shop day being held in aid of the housekeeping funds, which will benefit to, the extent of £3O. Those in charge of the stalls were: Fancy and jumble, Mesdames Barrer, Vennell, Milne, Taylor and Miss Brown; cakes, Mesdames McLean, Burling, Wright; sweets, Misses Ruby and Reader; flowers, Mesdames Pike and J. Gray; produce, Mesdames Gawith, Groves, McKenzie. Mrs W. James was in charge of tea arrangements. The competitions resulted as follows: Soldiers cake, Miss D. Gray 1, Miss Mary James 2; best apron, Mrs Barrer 1, Mrs Burling 2; Christmas novelty, Mrs Barrer 1; best toy, Mrs E. J. Wright 1. These competitions were judged by Mesdames D. James and W. McGovern. The members thank these ladies for their help, the Public Trust for the loan of the shop and all those who contributed to and supported the branch effort. Tbe competition for the organdie throw-over was won by Mrs N. P. Bennett.
It was reported that five applications for housekeepers were made during the month and are for cases of serious sickness. Appreciation was expressed of the good work of the emergency housekeepers. ' The president reported that a box of knitted clothes for babies was sent in by Mrs W. MacGregor to be forwarded to Britain for the Distress Fund. Christmas parcels have been sent to members’ sons overseas, and also to the Makogai Leper Fund. Contribu--tions of food had been made to the A.N.A. Club, and also parcels of clothing to the Lady Galway Patriotic Guild.
Miss Rutherford’s resignation _ was received with regret and appreciation of her past service placed on record. It was decided to donate an extra £5 to the annual grant made to the Wairarapa Provincial Council Housekeeping Fund. Mesdames E. J. Wright and J. Gray ■ reported in connection with what was being done in the way of providing woollen comforts for the Mercantile Marine. Already 102 garments had been forwarded and another parcel would be ready to send away at the end of the month. It was pointed out that the knitting and spinning work should not slacken during the summer months as the need for warm woollen comforts was urgently needed, especially by the minesweepers. It was decided to support the Countrywomen’s Club effort to send a contribution of jam, chutney, cake, etc., to the Seamen’s Club in Wellington next week. Arrangements were made by members to make the usual annual Christmas visit to the Public Hospital to provide afternoon tea on December 11.
Congratulations were extended to Mrs W. James in connection with the passes of her pupils in Home Nursing and Hygiene and to the pupils on their success.
Wishes for a: merry Christmas and happy new year were extended to members by the president.
