GRIM AND DEADLY
THE STRUGGLE FOR MOSCOW Germans Trying to Bypass Tula IN ORDER TO TAKE CAPITAL IN REAR SOME PROGRESS MADE AT PRODIGAL COST LONDON, November 28. Moscow faces its grimmest danger, with the Germans slowly moving forward to cut off the capital from the rear. South of Moscow the Russians admit German progress. The Germans claim to have captured a town 30 miles south-east of Tula. The “Izvestia” says that in capturing this town the Germans lost 2,000 men, over 50 guns and 16 planes. It appears that the Germans are making some progress in their efforts to bypass Tula to the rear of Moscow, but that they are doing so at prodigal cost. In th<? Kalinin area, north-west of Moscow, the Russians, in counter-attacks, have driven wedges into the enemy’s lines and have recaptured several villages. At the southern end of the front the Russians are continuing their counter-attacks in the Rostov area.
In nine days’ fighting on the Moscow front at least 300 German tanks have been destroyed.
