The most violent earthquake shock ever recorded in Britain put the seismograph at West Bromwich out of action at 6.8 p.m. yesterday. The tremors were so enormous that there was no hope of making a complete record. The levers of the recording instrument were thrown out of their sockets. The director of the Lisbon Observatory said the shock was the most severe for 186 years. Many Lisbon people rushed from buildings.
