MASTERTON PARK CLUB INTERESTING INNOVATION. TROPHY COMPETITIONS. There was a good attendance at the Masterton Park green on Saturday, and for the early games, the selector introduced another innovation, whereby the teams were reversed, a recognised lead and second playing skip and third, respectively, in each team. By this means' all players received splendid practice in their game, and some remarkable shots, achieving the desired results, were played, whilst the senior skips fought for supremacy in leading. It is hoped that the aim—improving the standard of..play, and giving the junior members an added incentivewill be accomplished. The club was particularly pleased to welcome an Eketahuna four, comprising Messrs Manser, Green, Smith and Williams, who played a return match with the Park team, Messrs Newton, Ferguson, Leigh and Burke. The visitors maintained the lead until the 19th end, when the Park drew level. 13 all. Eke-1 tahuna scored a single on the 20th, but a four to Park on the last head robbed them of victory. During the week lively interest was evinced in matches for the various, club trophies, for which seven games were played. The Ferns once again changed hands when Moore and Osborne (25) defeated Jenkins (Trevorrow sub) and O'Donnell (18).
The Keetley Medals also changed hands when G. Brown and E. Brown (father and son) defeated P. Smith and Shearer after a very close game, which was witnessed by an interested gallery. Brown established an early lead, but Shearar drew level on the 10th end when the board read 8-8. On the 18th end it was 16 all, and on the 20th 17 all, a single on the last head giving Brown the victory. As one of the players must be a colt, the juniors are receiving much useful training. For the Craft Medals the Post and Telegraph team, S. Taylor, A. Kilgour, A. Osborne, E. Burke (s) 28, defeated the blacksmiths, H. Anstice, S. Vincent, R. Simpson, J. Shearer (s), 14. In the initial game to determine the holders of the Ewington Feathers, A. Kilgour and E. Brown (s) 23, defeated E. Burke and J. Shearer (s) 18, but lost them to R. Wallace and R. Simpson (s), 21-14, the new holders staving off a challenge by C. Moore and O’Donnell (s), 10-10.
By courtesy of the committee, the first of a series of matches between past and present Borough Council employees was played on Friday evening for a handsome cup donated by Mi- R. Simpson. This was a very evenly contested game, which was witnessed by the usual interested gallery, and resulted in a win for the present employees, P. Trevorrow, P. Thompson, F. Knowles, — Ihaka (s) 21, defeating the past employees, T. Denbee. P. Buckley, B. Braggins, H. Carr (s), 20.
PARK V. MASTERTON AN ENJOYABLE CONTEST. During the weekend, four teams accepted an invitation to play on the Masterton Club’s green, and a most enjoyable time was spent by all. Mr H. B. Thomas, on behalf of the Masterton Club, extended a warm welcome to the visitors, and expressed the hope that the friendly interchange of visits would become the practice and not the exception. Mr E. Burke, president of the Park Club, thanked the Masterton Club for its kind invitation, and stated that his club would willingly co-oper-ate in the fostering of these inter-club visits. Ten teams participated in the play, a Masterton team skipped by A. Stubbings playing for Park. The games were all very interesting, with Masterton emerging the victors by 4 games to one, and 148 points to 94. The green was a little holding, a factor which proved a little troublesome to the Park players, whose green has been rather keen. Twenty-five ends were played, the results being as follows (Park players being mentioned first): Moore, Staniforth, Newton, Burke (sj lost to Gordon, Murdoch, Bannister, Finlayson (s) 16-27; Wiltshire, Trevorrow, O’Donnell, Shearer (s) lost to Wylie, Haycraft, Percy, Carstens (s), 10/32; White, G. Brown, Braggins, Ferguson (s) lost to Vowell, Kerslake, Hayne, Chapman (s), 13/37; Lewis, Connelll, Roberts, Stubbings (s) lost to Thomas, Palamontain, Hearle, E. Read (s), 31/32. In this game Reid made a remarkable recovery after being down 26-18 on the 22nd end. Andrews, Fenton, Leigh, S. Smith (s) defeated Holdsworth, Dickason, Beecroft, Morton (s), 24/20. On the 9th end the board read 6/6, but by the 15th end Smith led 19/7. A perfect trail on the 20th gave Morton 5. and he was now only 4 down, which; he reduced to 3 on the 23rd, the board reading 22/19. but a further 2 by Smith proved too big a hurdle on the last end. Afternoon tea was provided by the Masterton players, . the visitors thoroughly enjoying the hospitality of their hosts.
