The time was passed with ’ songs and musical items at the conclusion of which supper was provided. At an appropriate interval, the Rev. J. A. Daglish asked Miss Newbould to accept and open the many gift parcels, which she did amid applause. Mr Daglish said that he had a further pleasant duty to perform, that being a presentation, on behalf of the pupils and staff of the Sunday School, to Miss Newbould, who had been a teacher at the Sunday School for many years. He Wished Miss Newbould good luck and a very happy future and asked her to accept a set of three beautiful jugs. Miss Rita Jones, on behalf of the Sunday School teachers, said that they were sorry to lose the services of Miss Newbould. She extended the best wishes of the staff and pupils to hei. On behalf of Miss Newbould Mr Doug. Jackson returned thanks for the presents and for the enjoyable gathering. LEAGUE OF MOTHERS CHURCH PARADE. There was a' large attendance of members of the League of Mothers at the local Methodist Church yesterday, when the Rev. J.. t A. Daglish delivered an inspiring sermon, choosing as his text St. John 19, verses 25 and 26. He compared the grief and helplessness of Mary Magdalene when Christ was on the Cross and the message Jesus gave her with the position in which so many women were placed today, when their sons and husbands set out for distant lands with the attendant sufferings and dangers. However, in his opinion, there were wonderful opportunities awaiting all mothers to assist in building that new world we were all visualising. Now was the time to endeavour to stamp out drink, gambling and immorality, which unfortunately, were on the increase, so that the various countries would be better places to receive the soldiers when they returned home. After this war a spirit of forgiveness must prevail, and enmity, hatred and petty jealousies must be forgotten, otherwise wars would be perpetuated. He appealed to the mothers present to do all in their power to eradicate the existing evils, and to endeavour earnestly to bring up a good, Christian and God-fearing generation. Appropriate hymns and an anthem were sung by the church choir. Tennis Club, The Carterton courts were fully occupied on Saturday and some «f the younger players are showing good promise. - St. John Ambulance. The proceeds of the shop day held by the St John Ambulance on Friday will be devoted to providing the necessary training equipment for members of the Carterton branch. The success of the effort was in a large measure due to Mrs F. Taplin and her energetic committee. Women’s Institute. On Saturday evening next members of the Dalefield-Matarawa Women’s Institute will hold a dance in the Dalefield Hall. Mrs V. J. Ashton’s orchestra will provide the dance music. Personal. Mr- and Mrs J. C. Harp, of Belvedere Street, Carterton, left this morning on a holiday which is to be spent in Hamilton.
