CHILDREN’S CONTESTS JUDGING AT SCHOOLS. LIST OF PRIZEWINNERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The annual calf and lamb competitions at the various schools in the district commenced on Monday. The West Taratahi competitors were judged by Mr W. H. Hall, who was assisted in the sheep section by Mr W. B. Allen. There was a large attendance of settlers and parents, who, along with the children took a keen interest in the proceedings. The competitions resulted as follows: — Calves. Care and handling: John Anderson 1, Olga Reidy 2, Ray Blake 3, Lewis Allan 4. Dairy type: John Anderson 1, Lewis Allan 2, Olga Reidy 3,.Shirley Allen 4. A competition for standards 2 and under was arranged, the prize money for which was subscribed by those present, the result being:—Shirley Allan 1, Rex Blake 2, Shirley Quinn 3, Ray Daysh 4. Lambs. Black face: lan Daysh 1, Tom Reidy, 2, John Anderson 3. White face: Ray Blake 1, Shirley Allan 2, lan Hultenberg 3. At the conclusion of judging Mr Hall referred to the excellent condition in which the calves and lambs had been brought forward, reflecting credit upon the children. Before the judge commenced his duties the children were given the opportunity to judge the calves. Ray Blake selected the same animals as the judge did later, and was awarded first prize. Rex Blake was second and Edward Clark third. Morning tea provided by the ladies of the district, was much appreciated. Among the visiters were Mr F. C. Brockett, of the School Agricultural Department, and Messrs M. J. Parker and E. L. Rayner, chairman and secretary respectively of the Carterton group. CLAREVILLE SCHOOL. On Monday afternoon at the Clareville School, Mr Alan Fisher acted as judge of the Clareville entries. There were twelve entries in the calf .section and.' seven in the lamb division. Competition was keen and the awards were as follow: — Dairy Class Calves. R. Humphries 1, Raeburn Abbott 2, Keith Edwards 3. Care and handling: Raeburn Abbott 1, Dawn Rayner 2, June Daysh 3. Lambs. Longwool: June Rayner 1, Elizabeth Rayner 2, Keith Edwards 3. Short wool: Kelvin Stretton 1. Cooking Classes. Seniors: —Scones: Lorna Edwards 1, Kay Reid 2, Barbara Reid 3. Rock cakes: Lorna Edwards 1, Barbara Reid 2, Kay Reid 3. Hand rack: Keith Edwards 1, Gordon Edwards 2, Raeburn Abbott 3. Juniors:— Sewing: Gordon Edwards 1, Ray Humphries 2, Louis Rossitter 3. Art class: Nola Humphries 1. Lorna Edwards 2, Harold Daken 3. Sewing (seniors): Ann Daken 1, Lola Humphries 2, Barbara Reid 3. Mrs M. Campbell was the judge. Messrs F. C. Brockett and M. J. Parker were present. Afternoon tea provided by the Clareville Committee was much appreciated. DALEFIELD SCHOOL. There was a large attendance at the Dalefield School yesterday afternoon, ■when the judging of the annual calf and lamb club competitions took place. Mr Howard Feast, of Greytown, was the judge and expressed himself agreeably surprised at the quality of the exhibits. His awards were as follow: — Calves. Seniors:— Grade calves, care and handling: Maureen Conwell 1, Joan Ticehurst 2, Graham Press 3. Dairy type: Joan Ticehurst 1, Maureen Conwell 2, Graham Press 3. Pedigree calves, care and handling: Lola Parker 1, Annette Fairbrother 2. Type: Lola Parker 1, Annette Fairbrother 2. Juniors: —Care and handling: Joy Ticehurst 1, Jean Callister 2, Warren Hooper 3. Type: Warren Hooper 1, Joy Ticehurst 2, Fay Hooper 3. Champion class of school: Lola Parker (pedigree Friesian). Lambs. Senior: Graham Press 1, Colin Rogers 2, Joan Ticehurst 3. Junior: Dora Nielson 1, Shirley Gallon 2, Joy Ticehurst 3. Afternoon tea waS” served by the school children. & Mr M. J. Parker, chairman of the school committee, thanked the judge and the children for the splendid way in which the calves and lambs had been brought forward. He also thanked the settlers for having attended and the school teachers for their continued interest in the competitions. Messrs Brockett and E. L. Rayner were among those present.
