WHEN TO SOW

CALENDAR CANNOT ALWAYS BE FOLLOWED. Those who have been gardening for years know that strict adherence to the calendar is not very often possible in the first two or three months of the opening of the gardeners’ year. We Ifave known August to be so mild that seed sowing has been pushed forward so that September has seen rows of flourishing seedling plants in the garden. Some weeks later we have had a belated spell of winter, that has set everything back, checking growth and necessitating a good deal of re-sowing. A later start is calculated to escape disappointments of that kind. Vegetables may be hardy, but in the very young seedling stage they are fragile and very liable to suffer if exposed to biting cold and rough winds. The sooner we can get produce the better. It is those who have cosy corners and warm borders who have the opportunity to get in some early batches of vegetables and. they should make the most of their chances.
