LANSDOWNE SCHOOL

COMMITTEE MEETING. Mr McFarlane presided at the monthly meeting of the Lansdowne School Committee. There were also present Messrs J. McGregor, C. K. Long, R. Baker, A. V. Faulknor, J. R. Donovan, the secretary and the headmaster (Mr Jones). An apology for absence was received from Mr J. G. McKay. Accounts amounting to £2 9s 3d were passed for payment. The headmaster reported a total roll number of 278 and a considerably improved attendance. The lawns, gardens and playing areas were in very good order and were the subject of favourable comment by Department inspectors during a recent visit to the school. Several pupils were successful at the Carterton Show. Prizes were won in both writing and art sections, and in the competition for the best riders in the children’s section, wins were recorded by two of the pupils. During the month Mr Beere, of the Automobile Association, addressed the children on traffic rules and a most interesting film dealing with road conduct was screened. Mr Beere’s address was most impressive and the film shown held the interest of the children throughout. The thanks of the committee are due to the Rev A. McNeur for the use of the Sunday school in which to show the picture. It was reported that one hundred and seventy-five pupils had paid their annual subscription towards the funds of the Junior Red Cross Society, while the senior girls were continuing to make garments for patriotic purposes. It was stated that a visit to the school was paid by the inspectors, Messrs Johnston and O’Connor, during October and they expressed themselves well pleased with the work seen. The headmaster said that he was pleased to report that the publicity given to the matter of refuse left in the vicinity of the grounds had had the desired effect.
