Woman’s Body Found on Rocks. The naked body of a woman was found washed up on some rocks at the southern end of Eastbourne yesterday afternoon. She was Mrs Isabella Jones, aged 48 years, Buick Street, Petone. The body was found by Miss Hamilton, a teacher at the Eastbourne primary school. Reports were received by the Petone police at 8 o’clock yesterday morning that Mrs Jones was missing from her home, where she resided with members of her family. It is believed she left her- home clothed in a dressing gown. Mrs Jones, it is understood, had been ill for some time, and had undergone one operation and was about to undergo another.

Outrageous Prices. Astonishment at the prices of vegetables in Wellington was expressed by Christchurch witnesses before the Price Tribunal, which continued its investigation in Wellington yesterday into the high cost of vegetables. One witness said that Wellington people seemed to have accustomed themselves to high rents and living costs.. At one stage, the president of the tribunal, Mr Justice Hunter, said the prices were outrageous. Thousands of families within a few miles of where the tribunal sat were unable to buy sufficient vegetables. The witness to whom this was said replied that the solution was increased production. That was a matter for the Government. ■

Bookmaker Fined. John Henry Appleby, charged with carrying on the business of a bookmaker, was fined £5O at a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court in Palmerston yesterday. Postal Voting Forms. Amendments to the electoral regulations which were gazetted last night will in future allow applicants for postal votes to apply directly to the deputy returning officers at any polling booth for electoral forms. Formerly applicants for postal votes were required to apply to chief returning officers. High Price for Potatoes. The acute shortage in Pukekohe of new potatoes which developed on Thursday was reflected yesterday by a rise in the price of 2s per cwt. Supplies going away yesterday were being invoiced to retailers at 31s per cwt., on rail Pukekohe, and to wholesalers at £29 a ton. This is probably ■a record high level for this time of the year. The present situation is in sharp contrast to the position on the corresponding date last year. Then the price was 10s per cwt., with large supplies offering and business slow. Public Service Grading. The Government Service Grading Emergency Regulations, which were gazetted last night, give heads of departments which come under the control of the Public Service Commissioner and the Railways Department power to postpone the grading which at present must be made every five years. The new regulations state that this provision is to remain in force for the duration of the war, but a proviso is added that the regrading must take place some time not later than two years after the termination of the present war.

Fire in Mine. Production in the Glen Afton colliery, Huntly, was brought to a temporary standstill yesterday by an extensive outbreak of fire which was discovered in the mine at one o’clock this morning. The discovery was made by a shiftman in a section a considerable distance in from the mine outlet. After several hours of strenuous labour the fire was got under control, and the sealing process was completed as far as possible. It is not known yet how long the mine will be idle. There are 152 men employed in the mine, which covers a surface area of 3653 acres. The area of the workings is approximately.43B acres. When feeling ill with cough or chill, Don’t grudge yourself relief; Exert your will and “foot the bil,” ’Twill save you gold and grief. To check a cold ere it takes hold, Will health renewed assure; At trifling cost no time is lost, With Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure. 44
