RICCARTON CARNIVAL OAKS TO SALUTATION. WARDRESS WINS CANTERBURY CUP. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, November 12. There were several keen finishes on Oaks Day at Riccarton, for which the weather was again fine and the track in excellent order. The race for the Canterbury Cup provided plenty of thrills in the last furlong, four horses going past the post almost in line, with Wardress gaining the victory by half a head from Lambourn, who looked a little unlucky. Salutation won the Oaks Stakes in a close finish from Vin d’Honneur, who was cut back at the start and lost several lengths. The finish for the Jockey Club Handicap was a thriller, Wild Fox coming with a late run to win by a head and give the Chokebore Lodge stable its eleventh win in the race. She ran a track record and finished half a head in front of Not Out and Hearth, who dead-heated. There was an unfortunate accident in the opening event, the Port Cooper Hurdles, The Wrecker and Recollection falling at the second fence in front of the stands. The Wrecker broke his back and was destroyed, and his rider, L. Gough, was rolled on by Recollection and badly injured.
