CLOSING OF SHOPS

CHRISTMAS AND INeW YEAR HOLIDAYS. EMPLOYERS’ DECISION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., This Day. A decision to close all shops on Saturday, December 27, and Saturday, January 3, was made by the Mana-watu-Wairarapa Employers’ Association at a meeting yesterday. Mr H. L. Cunninghame, who presided, stated that it seemed ridiculous to open for three hours on the Saturday morning after two days’ holiday, especially when the position of stocks was taken into account. Mr H. W. Bovis, grocer’s section, said he was definitely in favour of closing on the Saturdays, and Mr M. Millar supported him. Mr Cunninghame pointed out that the position would not occur again for some years. Mr Millar then moved that business premises close on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday of the Christmas and New Year weeks, and this was carried.
