NAVY LEAGUE

MASTERTON AUXILIARY GARMENTS FOR SERVICEMEN. ACTIVITIES OF SPINNING CIRCLE. A well attended meeting of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Navy League was held yesterday afternoon, Mrs S. R. Gawith presiding. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames A. Caselberg, H. McKenzie Douglas, J. C. Forsyth, W. H. Robieson, S. Fletcher, D. M. Graham, and H. K. McIntosh. The wool committee reported that 83 garments were ready for packing after the meeting. This brought the number of garments for this year up to 1076. A request was received from Wellington that the Masterton branch should make and fill some “blue bags” each month for men going overseas, each bag to contain 1 pullover, 1 scarf, 1 balaclava, 1 body belt, 2 pairs of socks, 1 pair of mittens, 1 hussif, and 1 pair of seaboot stockings. It was decided to undertake to provide 3 bags each month ready for distribution and that a supply of blue material be purchased. > It was reported that since the last meeting 123 members had been enrolled at Solway College and 21 at the Alfredton School. A letter was received from the Patriotic Committee, asking if the Masterton branch of the Navy League would organise a collection of waste cotton material to be sold for patriotic purposes. It was decided, that while the Navy League was in favour of such a collection being made and would co-operate with other organisations in saving cotton materials, it could not undertake to organise the scheme. Miss K. Morrison gave an outline of the activities of the Spinning Circle which was formed some. weeks ago and now had 22 members. She stated that there were 16 spinning wheels in use, 2 attachments used on sewing machines, while one member utilised a hand-spindle. In the past 2 months 32-llbs. of wool had been spun. In connection with the Spinning Circle, an appeal had been made for black fleeces and already 12 fleeces and 3 sacks of wool had been received or promised. The committee wish to thank the following for these gifts:—Mesdames RGarland, J. R. Nicholls, and Messrs G. Hargreaves, John Andrew, James- Andrew, J. Morrison, Liverton and W. J. Pope (Featherston). A supply of black wool is needed for seaboot stockings for which home-spun is particularly suitable. The 'committee would also be glad to supply the spun wool to knitters who are willing to make the stockings.
