The Secretary for the Navy, Colonel Knox, announced the establishment of the Iceland “naval operating base,” with Admiral James Kauffmann as commandant. While the designation “Iceland naval operating base” was chiefly an organisational, one, he said, it was a step taken to enable extensive arid varied activities both ashore and afloat.
