WHEAT PRODUCTION

INCREASE IN ACREAGE

HOPE OF MEETING NEEDS.

WITHOUT IMPORTATIONS.

1 (By Telegraph—Press Association.) j CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. An increase of 13,000 acres in this • season’s wheat area was announced by ■ the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Sullivan) this morning. ' He said the crop estimates were for a total of 258,000 acres. Wet spring weather had prevented the usual 15 per cent of the crop being sown at this time, but had conditions been otherwise New Zealand would have reached its 300,000 acre goal. If the estimated area yielded a crop equal to that of the 1941 harvest of 34.4 bushels to the acre, .New Zealand would have 8,800,000 bushels—almost a year’s requirements. Wheat and flour at present in the Dominion will provide for New Zealand's requirements until about the middle of May, 1942, and when the coming harvest is added (on the basis of 34.4 bushels an acre), then enough will be in to supply re, quirements until at least March, 1943 Even on a more conservative estimate of 32 bushels to the acre, which is not quite sufficient for requirements, the Dominion should have enough to carry on until the harvest of 1943 with- . cut importations, ,
