EFFECTIVE BLOW

STRUCK BY RUSSIANS iN VOLOKOLAMSK AREA. ENEMY LINES PENETRATED DEEPLY. • (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.45 a.m.) RUGBY, November 7. While the latest Russian communique states: “During the night of November 6 our troops fought the enemy on all the fronts,” Press messages from Kuibyshev describe counter-at-tacks in the direction of Volokolamsk which have been successfully developed under General Rokossovcky. Two * villages were captured and the advance is continuing. General Rokossovcky launched his counter-attack in an effort to block the enemy’s move to encircle the Russians. The action was begun' as a measure of defence, but the general followed up his initial success, widened and intensified his drive and flung in mounted troops, which struck in the rear of the enemy and pressed on for five kilometres, wrecking German communications.
