WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

MEETING AT OPAKI. COMPETITION WINNERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Opaki Women’s Institute was held at the home of Mrs Wingate. Mrs Beetham presided. A letter was received from a soldier overseas thanking the Institute for a parcel. Miss lorns gave a report on the Council meeting of the Wairarapa Federation held at Carterton in October. During the afternoon Mrs Beetham showed samples of edible seaweed and of the product after preparation, for which she gave instructions. The roll call “Household Hints” brought some useful advice. The monthly competitions resulted as follows:—Sewing: Mrs Rayner, 1; Mrs Dagg, 2; Mrs Buick, 3. Cooking: Mrs Rayner, 1; Mrs Milldr, 2; Mrs Beetham, 3. Best bloom: Mrs Rayner, 1; Mrs Dagg, 2; Mrs Harris, 3. In December the meeting will be held at Mrs Beetham’s home. The competitions will be mince pies, an article for sale at the next group shop day, and the best bloom. The roll call will be an Irish or Scotch joke. Afternoon tea was served.

SOLWAY-M ANAIA.

SEVERAL COMPETITIONS DECIDED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the SolwayManaia Women's Institute was held in the Epiphany Hall, Masterton, on Thursday, Mrs Diamond presiding over a fair attendance of members. Mrs Foster gave a report on the half-yearly council meeting held at Carterton and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. A letter of thanks was received from the Navy League for the jersey and the balaclava which had been knitted by members. The roll call, “The most foolish thing I have done,” was well responded to. Competitions resulted as follows: — Best bloom: Mrs Davies, 1. Collection of irises: Mrs Catton, 1; Mrs Catherall Senr., 2. Cooking (ginger nuts): Mrs Woollett, 1; Mrs Diamond, 2. Sewing (Christmas novelties): Mrs Carman, 1; Mrs Sutherland and Mrs Catton equal, 2; Mrs Kirk, 3. The programme for December, instead of the usual roll call items, will be given by the children of members. A bring and buy stall will also be held. The competitions will be: —Cooking (Christmas cake), best bloom, collection of . sweet peas and best Christmas lily, sewing (apron). The hostesses will be Mesdames G. Allen, Barnes, Cotton and Miss Billington.

TiNUI MEETING.

(“Times-Age” Special.)

The monthly meeting of the Tinui Women’s Institute was held in the Tinui Hall on Thursday, when Mrs Speedy presided over a fair attendance of members.

A report of the half-yearly Council meeting held at Carterton, was given by Miss Atack. Mrs Tye gave a most interesting talk on “Patent Medicines,” for which she was thanked.

The competitions resulted as follows: —Best decorated bowl of flowers: Mrs Bennett, 1; Mrs Beck, 2; Mrs Brodrick, 3. Wholemeal scones: Mrs Street, 1; Mrs Brodrick, 2. Best bloom: Mrs Atack, 1; Mrs McKay, 2; Miss O’Hara,
