DEEP WEDGE
DRIVEN BY RUSSIANS INTO ENEMY POSITIONS. AN ATTACK ANTICIPATED & FORESTALLED. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, November 6. The Moscow radio this morning stated: “In the Volokolamsk sector the main blow was dealt to the Germans by a unit under the command of Colonel Rokossovsky. It had recently become clear that the enemy intended to strike from this direction toward the capital, and it was decided to attack while his preparations were still going on. “Russian artillery opened with a terrific bombardment against the enemy concentrations, and this was followed up by an infantry attack. In the first skirmishes 200 Germans were killed and three guns and many trench mortars, machine-guns and other weapons were captured. “The Germans were driven out of the villages of Mihailovo, Torrino, Marino and several others.’ The enemy infantry were cut off from artillery support, and Russian cavalry attacked the enemy from the rear, hampering his operations. By yesterday evening Russians troops had penetrated six kilometres (nearly 4 miles) into the enemy positions.”
