WOMEN’S LAND ARMY
WORK IN NEW ZEALAND REGULATIONS GAZETTED. MINIMUM WAGES FIXED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The establishment in the future of a women’s land army in New Zealand is indicated by regulations gazetted last evening providing for the employment of land girls. This is done by the Agricultural Workers’ Labour Legislation Suspension Order, 1941, which came into force yesterday. The order affects female agricultural workers of 18 years of age and over employed on dairy farms, or on farms and stations used for the commercial production of wool, meat, and/or grain (including seeds), and who have been selected for such employment by an organisation authorised by the Minister of National Service. The order will also apply to the girls’ employers. The provisions of the Agricultural Workers’ Act are suspended to permit the following minimum wages to be paid to such workers: On dairy farms, 35s weekly and keep for the first six months, and thereafter 42s 6d weekly plus keep. On other farms and stations, 30s weekly for the first six months, plus keep, and thereafter 35s plus keep.
