TANK DIVISION
DISPATCH FROM AUSTRALIA TO MIDDLE EAST DECISION CONFIRMED. STATEMENT BY ARMY MINISTER. LONDON, November 5. The Australian Army Minister, Mr Forde, announced that the decision of the Commonwealth Government to send an armoured division to the Middle East stands unchanged. When the division would go depended on circumstances. It would be equipped with British and American tanks. Mr Forde’s statement follows upon an earlier intimation by the Federal Prime Minister (Mr Curtin) that the decision to send an armoured division to the Middle East was to be reviewed in light of the situation in the Pacific. Mr Curtin denied any disagreement whatever with the British Government cn war policy. Mr Duff Cooper is expected to confer in Australia with the Australian Commander-in-Chief in the Middle East (Sir Thomas Blarney) on the situation in the Pacific. Mr Duff Cooper stated that he had no authority to take action but was empowered to enter into discussions and to send proposals to London.
