HOMING PIGEONS
MASTERTON CLUB. RACE FROM MERCER. In connection with the Masterton Homing Pigeon Club’s race from Mercer, a distance of 253 miles, the first two birds home were three-quarters of an hour ahead of the next birds, having been on the wing for 9| hours. Only 15 out of the 30 birds sent homed in race time. The result was as follow: —W. Steer’s “Nondescript,’ 793yds. per minute, 1; A. Pinkney’s “Gay Artist,” 784yds. per minute, 2; J. Mayes’s “Unexpected,” 731yds. per minute, 3; E. Wickens and Son’s “The Trimmer,” 727yds. per minute, 4; A. Pinkney’s “Lilac,” 722yds. per minute, 5; C. J. Douglas’s “Dixie,” 690yds. per minute. 6. The race was also the first one of three in which members nominated two birds and the owner obtaining the highest points will win a rose bowl. There were only three nominated birds home in race time as follow: —A. Pinkney’s “Gay Artist,” 8 points, 1; JMayes’s “Unexpected,” 7 points, 2; W. J. Miller’s “Dawn Patrol,” 6 points, 3. The next race will be from Picton.
