WELLINGTON CHAMPIONSHIPS. LOW SCORING IN MATCHES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. One-day matches were introduced by the Wellington Cricket Association on Saturday afternoon, when the senior championship competition was started in fine weather and on easy wickets. Scoring was low and play somewhat monotonous at times. There is an old cricket saying that batsmen can only score as quickly as the bowlers will let them, and this was proved again on Saturday. The Trentham Army team (9 wickets for 163) beat Johnsonville (136) by 27 runs on the first innings. Air Force (198) scored an exciting victory over Institute Old Boys (195) by three runs on ,the first innings. Petone (123) celebrated their reinstatement in senior ranks by outplaying Hutt (72). Midland (111) beat Kilbirnie (102) by nine runs' on the first innings. University (70 and 7 for 155) beat Wellington (135 and 1 for 89 declared) outright by three wickets. Karori beat Wellington College Old Boys by 89 runs after Karori had applied the closure with 235 runs on for the loss of seven wickets. PRACTICE GAMES AT COLLEGE. Enjoyable practice games were played on the College grounds on Saturday by members of the Red Star senior and junior teams and the College seniors and juniors, the players being intermixed. An excellent pitch was provided. The Red Star players in particular greatly appreciated the privilege and courtesy extended to them in the provision of a pitch to play on. Some very promising form was shown, particularly by the youngest players.
