BRIGHT SCENE AT CARTERTON SHOWGROUNDS

Fine Weather and Large Attendance MANY ATTRACTIONS IN THE RING FURTHER CHAMPIONSHIP AND OTHER AWARDS With the weather overcast and a westerly breeze, the C<nterton (Showgrounds today presented an animated scene o. gaiety. Wairarapa residents in their thousands thronged the grounds and enjoyed all the fun of the fair. The show ling, where horse competitions and the grand parade of stock weie held, the implement displays, sideshows and other attractions held the attention of their respective quotas of spectatois. Scottish airs played by the Wairarapa College Pipe Band set many feet tapping. The conditions could not have been moie favourable for People’s Day. Today saw the completion o judging in a few cattle classes and in the horse and dog sections. Congenial weather conditions last evening favoured the night session, which attracted a large attendance of the public, visitois being present from all parts of the Wairarapa. 1 oung and old • alike had a happv time and the many and varied sideshows were liberally patronised. The Scottish dancing was watched by a large number of\spectators. The gate takings yesterday totalled £35 1/s 6d, an increase of £1 7s compared with the first day last year. At the night session the gate receipts amounted to £6O 8s 6d, against £72 8s for the night show last year.

A visitor to the show today was the Hon. J. G. Barclay, Minister of Marketing, who was welcomed by the president, Mr J. A. McLeod. Well over 100 children from the Upper Hutt School also visited the show today, much to the delight of . the youngsters, who found never-failing interest in the stock and other varied exhibits.

Members of the St John Ambulance were on duty at the Showgrpunds during the afternoon.
