WAITOTARA MURDER
KATENE FOUND GUILTV SENT TO GAOL FOR LIFE. FIRST CASE UNDER NEW LAW. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WANGANUI, October 29. The first person to be tried on a capital charge since the New Zealand Government abolished the death-pen-alty, Pipe Katene, labourer, aged 28, was found guilty in the Supreme Court today of the murder of Arthur Harding Parkinson, storekeeper, Waitotara, aged 79. Mr Justice Smith sentenced Katene to imprisonment with hard labour for life.
