BOROUGH AFFAIRS

CARTERTON COUNCIL MEETING HELD LAST NIGHT. TENDERS ACCEPTED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Mayor (Mr D. L. Taverner) presided over the monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council held in the Council Chambers last evening. There were also present Councillors E. McKenzie, W. A. Hart, H. Mortenson, L. M. Clark, C. E. Stevens, C. J. DeLacey, H. E. Jackson and the Clerk, Mr P. A. Cole. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. W. R. Harry and Miss O. W. Wolters. The treasurer reported a dr. balance of £4. Os 8d in the District Fund a/c. The Gasworks a/c. was in credit to the extent of £685 18s 7d. Accounts amounting to £528 13s 5d (District Fund a/c.) and £237 Os 8d (Gasworks a/c.) were passed for payment. The New Zealand Institute of Town Clerks wrote stating that Home Guard expenditure by local authorities other than out of capitation was regarded as unauthorised as from September 10. The clerk was authorised to write for official information on the matter.

The Deputy Controller of the Medical and Public Health section of the E.P.S. wrote in regard to the requirements for the Carterton branch. It was resolved that the sub-committee be authorised to purchase the equipment required. The tender of Mr P. T. Edwards, of Garrison Street, for the erection of approximately 25 chains of fencing and for the dismantling of a short section of the existing fencing on the new stock road was accepted. Messrs Feist and Co.’s tender for the supply of lOcwt of No. 8 fencing wire was accepted. The purchase of approximately 1 rood 11 perches of land from Mrs M. A. Roberts for the purpose of straightening the new stock road was decided upon.

The action of the Town Clerk in arranging with Mr G. Mayger, Carterton, for the supply of 13 dozen dog collars was endorsed. The Foreman, Mr Geo. James, was instructed to prepare a tarring programme for the summer months. The Works Committee reported it could not see its way clear to exchange property as suggested by the Carterton School Committee, and supported the existing arrangement of a year-to-year lease at a peppercorn rental, for the purpose of a basketball playing area.
