ESSENCE OF ALL ART

Surely the essence of all art is the perception qf identities between phenomena normally considered diverse, and the drawing of them together into a beautiful, because harmonious, whole, contends a correspondent writing' to the “Listener,” of London. It is, in other words, the discovery and presentation of the universal order permeating all creation, which the normal mind does not perceive because it penetrates no deeper than external appearances. Artistic inspiration is a fleeting revelation to the individual being of that soul behind the universe which even Christians these days seem too shy to call God. This grandly simple conception of the cosmos would also, of course, explain all the other branches of creative activity.
