NAZIS DEFIED
BY PEOPLE OF NANTES LIGHTS SHOWN TO GUIDE BRITISH BOMBERS. BLACKOUT CURTAIN RIPPED. LONDON, October 28. It is now known that the people of Nantes, undeterred by German terrorism, showed lights to guide the British bombers which attackthe port. Although the town is ringed about by a cordon of German troops, lights flashed out, as the bombers roared overhead, as if the blackout curtain had been ripped. One British pilot saw a V sign picked out on the ground with lamps. Incendiary and high explosive bombs were dropped on the docks and on enemy shipping. Leaflets were dropped on the town. Fifty hostages have been executed at Nantes and the same number at Bordeaux. Another hundred are awaiting execution. FRENCH CARDINAL RECEIVED BY THE POPE. (Received This Day, 9.35 a.m.) ROME, October 28. The Pope gave a private audience to the French Cardinal Tisserant, who is reported to have discussed the question of French hostages. ACTION BY HOLY SEE (Received This Day, 11.0 a.m.) LONDON, October 28. According to a report from Berne, the Holy See last week charged the Papal Nuncio at Berlin with the task of approaching Germany on behalf of the Nantes and Bordeaux hostages. It is understood that Cardinal Tisserant, at today’s audience with the Pope, reported a German decision to suspend the shooting of the further hundred hostages.
