MASTERTON PARK CLUB OPENS SEASON. RELIEF FOR CONGESTION ON LAWNS. The opening of the Masterton Park Croquet Club took place on Saturday in unfavourable weather. On behalf of the club, Mrs Donnelly (president) welcomed Mrs Jordan (patroness), also old and new members and visitors and wished them a happy and successful season.
Before asking Mrs Jordan to play the first ball Mrs Donnelly said she would also like Mrs Jordan to open a small new lawn which was going to relieve congestion on the lawns considerably. The thanks of the club were extended to the Mayor, councillors and Park Committee for their help in this connection.
Mrs Jordan then played the first ball and declared the season open.
Bouquets were presented to Mesdames Jordan and Donnelly. The bouquets were the artistic work of Mrs Snowsill Senr.
Afternoon tea was served in the club room. During the winter, Mrs Bassett made and raffled a bedcape, and on Saturday handed over to the club a set of balls, clips and a carrier complete which she had obtained with the proceeds of the raffle. A hearty vote of thanks was passed by acclamation to Mrs Bassett and also to Mr Bassett for obtaining these articles at reduced cost. Bridge was played, Mrs Hatch being the winner, and Mrs Wilson Thompson won the hidden number prize. The lawns were in excellent order and the thanks of the club were extended to the Park custodian for this help and for many kindnesses. The club has an increased membership this year and everything points to a successful season.
