CARTERTON

WAIRARAPA SHOW OPENING DAY TOMORROW. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Carterton Showgrounds yesterday were the scene of a veritable hive of industry in preparation for the annual show which opens on the Society’s commodious grounds tomorrow. A working bee was busy all day arranging pen numbers, etc., and the side show people were erecting their various tents from which attractions of interest will be displayed tomorrow (day and night) and all day on Thursday. The usual games and merry-go-rounds will be in evidence in large numbers and tomorrow evening at the night show there will be plenty of fun and entertainment for young and old. The services of the Wairarapa College Pipe Band have been secured to supply the music for the show. The band will play on People’s Day (Thursday). The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, invites the residents of Carterton Borough and district to observe Thursday, People’s Day of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society’s Annual Show, as a public holiday from 11 a.m. ODD FELLOWS LOYAL HEART OF OAK LODGE. The fortnightly meeting of Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge was held last evening. ■ N.G. Bro. H. J. Rathbone presided. Sick pay totalling £4 10s and other accounts amounting to £2 Ils 6d were passed. The secretary reported haivng visited two sick members who were not enjoying the best of health, also that he had written to members on active service overseas. It was decided to purchase health stamps to the value of £l. Correspondence was received from the District Secretary regarding the medical services scheme and circulars would reach secretaries for inclusion with the next quarterly lodge notices. BOWLING SUCCESSFUL PAIRS TOURNEY. Sixteen players of the Carterton Bowling Club. held. a. .successful progressive pairs tournament yesterday. Some good games were played and in several instances close finishes were recorded. The winners were Messrs A. Thompson (lead) 4 wins, 1 loss, 81 points; J. L. Harris (skip) 3 wins 1 draw and a loss, 75 points. The ladies’ club had an enjoyable afternoon’s play. Five new members were present. RED CROSS EXAMINATION RESULTS. The following members of the Carterton V.A.D. section of the Red Cross have passed their intermediate first aid examination: —Miss Smart (honours), Mrs D. Steffert (honours), Miss S. Vaughan, Miss Ingley, Miss E. Newbold, Miss'L. Moody, Mrs M. Goodin, Miss V. Tucker. Dr. Morton and Mrs Marshall were the lecturers, and Dr. Wells and Mrs Stewart the examiners. Long Night Dance, Dance patrons are reminded of the~ long night dance to be held in the bandroom tomorrow evening. Personal. Mrs Smith, of Tyne Street, Carterton, has received advice that her son has reached his destination. Mr and Mrs W. Spooner, of Rhodes Street, have received interesting letters from their sons in Egypt. Both are fit and well. Cheese for Export Very heavy consignments of cheese are being loaded at the Carterton, Clareville and Dalefield railway stations en route for cool storage in Wellington.
