WELLINGTON MEETING SECOND DAY AT TRENTHAM. CHIEF EVENT TO WARDRESS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, October 26. It was the South Island’s day out at Trentham on Saturday on the second day of the Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting. They won five races, including the two most important events, the Wellington Guineas and the Watkins Handicap, and in addition supplied the second horse .on three occasions and third once. The win of Salutation in the Guineas was a surprise to most people, as she had failed in a hack handicap under a very light weight the first day. However, she looked a greatly improved filly when stripped on Saturday and, having plenty of size, she proved well up to the weight she had to carry and scored a clear-cut victory. ' Wardress, who has in the past proved partial to the Trentham track, won a narrow but well-merited success in the Watkins Handicap over an improved showing by The Monarch. The consistent Augment, who had run third on the first day in the ,open sprint, moved up to first place in the Awatea Handicap with a solid finishing effort. The weather was showery early, but improved. A cold, bleak southerly wind prevailed all day, and as the result of the rain the track was soft and slower than on the first day. There was a large attendance, and the totalisator handled £85,156 (win £37,713 10s, place £47,442 10s), compared with £80,024 10s on the Saturday last year, an increase of £5131 10s.
