The capture of Kharkov by the Germans is officially denied in Moscow. . The Moscow radio says a serious situation has developed in one sector of the central front, where the Germans, throwing in more and mere reinforcements, forced the So YJ et ' abandon two villages. The Russian command decided occupy, a new position on the other side of a river, the ban., of whicl presents an excellent defence line. . A war despatch to the ‘ ‘ Pravda ’ ’ says: “ The Germans in the past 24 hours, made several attacks on the southern sector o the Moscow front, but failed. The enemy is throwing in new troops all along the bank of the river Oka where it flows alongside an important road running south-east of the capital, in ine hope of finding a weak point and reaching the highway. At one point only, the enemy succeeded, with fresh divisions, m driving a wedge into the Soviet positions and pressing back our troops slightly. Artillery fire and bombing stopped any further enemy advance. “The Red Army repulsed several attacks in the Makeevka 00ctor * “A fierce battle continues at Kalinin,, where a fight for possession of a large granary is proceeding. ” A German communique states: “The occupation of the Donetz basin continues. Offensive operations are proceeding on other sectors of the Eastern front. The Luftwaffe destroyed parts,of the Murmansk railway line, and barracks on the Ribaciii Peninsula.
