Masses of Tanks, Bombers and Troops Thrown In new Threat developing to Moscow ■ ROAD-BUILDING IN IRAN IN FULL SWING LONDON, October 26. Tonight the main news from the Russian front again centres on the dangerous German thrust towards Rostov, on the Don, and beyond to the Caucasus. The Russians describe the situation as serious. The Germans are reported to be bringing up masses of tanks, bombers and infantry and flinging them into the battle on the approaches to Rostov. In spite of the increasing German pressure, there is no indication that the Russian’s outer defences of Rostov have anywhere been pierced. A Russian communique states that the city of Stalin has been evacuated. In the battle for the city, the Germans lost 50,000 men killed and wounded, 250 tanks, 170 guns and 1200 lorries. The Germans claimed the capture of Stalin some days ago. Continued fighting is reported in the Eastern Ukraine. There is no news from any other source in confirmation of the German claim to have captured Kharkov. . . A Russian communique again refers to fighting at Mojaisk ' and Malo Yaroslavets, where German pressure is intensified, but the Russian lines are still intact. A new threat to the capital is indicated in one message which states that the Germans are making determined efforts to cross the River Oka, south of Moscow, in an attempt to reach an important motor road running south-east from the capital.
