IN EARLY PROSPECT

NEW WAR PARTNERSHIP ■ 6 OUR TROOPS AND SOUTH AFRICANS.RUGBY MUCH IN FAVOUR AT MOMENT. (Received This Day, 11.25 a.m.) (From the Official War Correspondent, N.Z.E.F.) CAIRO, October 24. Pages in the history of future phases of the war may be lit with a name like Sanzacs if New Zealanders’ hopes that South African forces may be our next partners in • action are realised. Husky troops from the Union are .close and friendly neighbours of ours in the present period of waiting, and already a sort of affiliation exists between j New Zealand brigades and battalions and corresponding South African formations. This does not mean that we are already closely linked with them from a military viewpoint. Courtesy visits are exchanged, however, and it is only natural that the respective commanders should talk shop, arguing over tactics and relating experiences in the field. More important to the man in the ranks at the moment is the fact that inter-Dominion football matches are being arranged. At this moment the infantry brigade to which I am attached is playing a final Probables versus Possibles match to select a team to meet representatives of its sister South African brigade. When divisional teams are chosen we are likely to see a sprinkling of former Springboks and All Blacks meet again in what ought to be the most attractive test match yet played in Egypt. Taking a longer view, most New Zealanders would, I think, like to have the South Africans fighting by their side. If that happens, I feel that a new and illustrious name will have to be found for a new and ideal front line partnership.
