SOLWAY COLLEGE
SILVER JUBILEE CELEBRATION. GARDEN PARTY YESTERDAY. Solway College’s silver jubilee celebrations commenced yesterday afternoon with the annual garden party. After a short concert in the Assembly Hall by the present pupils, the Rev. John Davie introduced Mrs Hora Shaw, an old girl of the school, who as a prefect organised the first bazaar held at the school for the funds of Dr. John Kirk of the Canton Village Mission. Mrs Shaw stated that the proceeds of the 1941 bazaar-would be allocated tc the Chaplain’s Fund. In declaring the bazaar open she urged all to spend freely. As the weather was unsettled stalls had been erected in the school rooms, where, owing to the generosity of the public and the support of old girls from all parts of New Zealand, a large amount was raised. Thanks were due to donors of goods, etc., to the old girls who arranged afternoon tea, and to the following stallholders: Produce, Evyln Bodkin, Margaret Ryder, Mary Caldwell, Mervan McCulloch; savouries, Romola Thomson, Lin Tombleson, Fay Ward, Judy Agar; needlework, Avis Reed, Noeleen Spooner; Christmas gifts, Thule Moffatt, Nola Walker; soft drinks, Henrietta Shapley, Glenys Row, Marie Humphrey; flowers, Isabel Baker, Naomi Harris, Margaret and Helen Bibby; bran tub, Ann Bunkhant, Joan Couling, Noleen Speedy, Betty Love; hoop-la, Joan and Betty Simmonds, Molly Courtney, Barbara Saunders; fortune-telling, Doreen Thornley, Alison Marshall, Patricia McKnight; sideshows, Barbara King, Irene Christian, Dorothy Franklin, Myra Kemp, Mary McMaster, Shirley McMaster, Mooren Franklin, Joy Craine, and Kathleen Williams.
