CARTERTON
BOWLING SEASON TO BE OPENED TOMORROW. ("Times-Age” Special.) Tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock, wet or fine, the Carter ton Bowling ■green will be officially opened for play for the seas'on. Substantial improvements have been made to the grounds, and the president, Mr Frank Barr, and his willing band of workers are to be complimented in this connection. The president will officially declare the green open after Mrs Barr has thrown the first “jack” and sent down the first bowl. The paths have been re-sealed, a fair amount of brightening up of buildings carried into effect by the use of the paint brush, all. the seats have been repainted and the green has received attention. The garden has been planted with choice seedlings and when they flower the surroundings should be a blaze of colour. Members are asked to be punctual to enable the selectors to arrange teams, and to note that it will be a general “tea day.” Post Office Hours. On Monday next (Labour Day) the Carterton Post Office will be closed in i all branches with the exception of the telephone exchange. There will be no postal deliveries. Bank Holiday. A special Bank holiday will be observed by the banks in Carterton, Greytown and Featherston on Thursday, October 30, “People’s Day” of the Wairarapa and East Coast P. and A. Society Show. The banks in Featherston will close all day and those in Carterton and Greytown from 12 o’clock. Death of Valuable Jersey Bull. Mr Joe Fitzgerald suffered by death the loss of his valuable 6-year-old Jersey bull on Wednesday night. The animal was bred by Mr Heaphy, of Greytown,, and had a show ring record. It was Mr Fitzgerald’S intention to exhibit the bull at the forthcoming Carterton Show. On Tuesday the animal appeared to be in good health but on Wednesday Mr Fitzgerald found the animal dead in a paddock. Wairarapa Show. Dairy breeds of cattle will be well represented at the Wairarapa show on Wednesday and Thursday, October 29 and 30, and the reputation of the Wairarapa show as one of the best dairy shows in New Zealand, should be upheld. There should be very keen comthroughout the usual breeds | of sheep and a very strong challenge i will be issued from outside exhibitors in the Southdown section. Dorset Horn sheep will be well represented and this section will no doubt again be a centre of interest. Church Services. A Church of England service will be held at Waihakeke at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
