Mr R. A. Gower has been reappointed a member of the Wellington Land Board. The death occurred at Apiti of Mr Joseph Buckman,' uncle of Miss Rosina Buckman, formerly of Masterton, the well known operatic singer. Dr. D. G. Johnston, of Sumner, Christchurch, is visiting the Wairarapa and is the guest of his son, Mr J. P. Johnston, Coradine Street, Masterton. Cheering crowds lined the streets of Nelson yesterday afternoon as Sergeant A. C. Hulme, V.C., in an open car, accompanied by his wife and two children, was driven in a procession headed by the Garrison Band, to the Church Steps for a civic reception after his return to Nelson by plane. A large crowd of 2000 citizens and school children attended the gathering, shops in town being closed for’ half an hour. The record of 60 years’ service with the “Otago Daily Times,” Dunedin, of Mr Harry Harris, manager of the job printing department, was recognised on Wednesday night, when a presentation in which all departments of the newspaper' participated was made to him. Mr Harris is known throughout the Dominion for his long connection with Rugby. He is a life member of the New Zealand and Otago Unions, and was New Zealand selector and joint manager -of the Maori team which toured England and France in 1926. An officer of the Salvation Army for more than 40 years, Brigadier Andrew Gray died in Wellington yesterday, aged 72. Brigadier Gray, who was born in Victoria, served in the Salvation Army in New South Wales. He came to New Zealand many years ago. At the outbreak of war he was appointed chaplain-captain at the Salvation Army hut at Trentham. Immigration and social work occupied much of his time from 1920. Brigadier Gray retired about eight years ago. A member of one of Wellington’s oldest families, Mr Arthur James Jacka, of Grant Road, died recently. He was born in Wellington 77 years ago. Mr Jacka was for many years employed in the Wellington-Manawatu Railway Company, and was afterwards in business on his own account. In his day, Mr Jacka was an excellent footballer, and played for the old Union Club. He was also an enthusiastic yachtsman, and a member of the crew of Red Jacket, a noted yacht owned by Fred and Charles Ganaway. Later he sailed Pet when she was owned by the late Mr Jack Gibbons. He was also a prominent cricketer. The funeral of the late Mr R. R. Burling, of Masterton, took place yesterday afternoon. There was a large attendance of mourners, representative of the whole of the Wairarapa district. The Rev. John Davie officiated. Among the many beautiful floral tributes were wreaths from' the following: Directors of Murray Roberts and Co., Ltd., manager and staff of Dalgety and Co., Ltd., Woodlands shearing gang, Pongaroa, Malmo Motors Ltd. and staff, Thos. Borthwick and Sons, Ltd., Hadlow School. The pall-bearers were Messrs F. Meech, H. W. Higginson, E. M. Small, R. McKenzie, C. McKenzie, and Staff-Sergeant Major C. A. Burling.
